"Tonight I'm suspending my campaign," Bush told his supporters, clearly moved to learn that in the South Carolina primary he barely reached 10 percent of the vote. "I refuse to bow to political winds," added the former Florida governor.

Bush, who began the campaign as the favorite for the Republican nomination, never managed to lead the polls. In the first ones from South Carolina, the tycoon Donald Trump prevailed, while the second place is disputed by the senators from Florida and Texas, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz.

During his brief speech, he thanked his brother, former US President George W. Bush, and his mother, Barbara, for having participated with him in the last days of the campaign. "The United States really loves and respects them," Bush stressed.
