Razer's new Zephyr Pro mask: ideal for hybrid work life

After finding success late last year with its Zephyr face mask — similar to that of DC Comics villain Bane — which itself grew out of an earlier concept that debuted at CES 2020 in the guise of Project Hazel, Razer is back with a new N95 skin at CES 2022. The gaming PC maker is expanding its N95 face mask lineup this year, with the new Zephyr Pro model.

Like last year's Zephyr, the Zephyr Pro mask has the game maker's Chroma RGB lighting system, which can be controlled via a mobile app; dual PC-type fans, which are said to help with cooling and ventilation, and N95 filters to help prevent coronavirus. The Zephyr Pro debuts just as the world grapples with a spike in coronavirus infections following the discovery of the omicron variant.

With the Pro model, Razer brings back a feature from the Project Hazel concept that was subsequently dropped with the launch of the original Zephyr mask late last year. The Zephyr Pro now comes with voice amplification. The company claimed the technology helps the wearer's voice sound clearer and less muffled, problems that are common with traditional cloth masks. This helps communication, and the solution can be good for those working in a hybrid environment.

While the Zephyr Pro has a form-fitting seal just like its predecessor, Razer updated the style of its new face mask. At first glance, the Zephyr Pro looks more like a semi-transparent face shield that only covers the nose and mouth.

With flashy RGB lighting and a gaming-inspired design that looks like something out of a gaming PC, the Zephyr Pro mask might seem too aggressive for most people.

However, despite Razer's chosen aesthetic, the company reportedly had early success with the original Zephyr: It sold out within minutes of being available despite a higher price compared to traditional face masks and the additional replacement cost of N95 filter packs. This is a good indicator for the new version of this mask.

Razer has not revealed details about the Zephyr Pro's availability or its price. For comparison, the previous Zephyr started at $99 when it launched.
