Two weeks after the state of alarm was declared, we assume that there is no longer a soul in this country without knowing how to wash their hands correctly. Just in case, they already know that you have to rub very well for twenty seconds (or while singing "happy birthday" twice).

However, there are other issues related to hygiene that are still not so clear to us. What is the best way to disinfect objects and surfaces? What do the health authorities recommend? Not all cleaning products that we find in the supermarket are equally effective against coronavirus. We analyze the most used products:

Soap, always

It is the star tool to end covid-19. And the cheapest. The soap "dissolves" the lipid bilayer that covers the virus. It is as if it stripped it, leaving it inactive. The good news is that, in addition to washing our hands, it can also be used to clean objects and surfaces. A cellulose paper impregnated in a soapy water solution can be used, for example, to clean the containers that we bring from the purchase.

Alcohol. in which cases?

In addition to attacking "the fat of the virus" as soap does, alcohol also acts against its proteins. Of course, as long as the alcohol has a graduation of more than 62% and it is applied for at least one minute. Why is it not recommended at this time to use alcohol as the first option to clean surfaces? In the first place because we suffer from alcohol shortages and it is a resource that we must reserve for other issues, not for domestic cleaning. And secondly because it is more aggressive for the skin. It is true that it can be effective for cleaning some objects such as the mobile phone case. But soap is too. And cheaper.

Oxygenated water, when?

It is effective against the coronavirus in concentrations of at least 0.5% and for at least one minute. As with alcohol, hydrogen peroxide is a product that suffers from shortages and its use should be restricted to the healthcare environment.

Correct use of bleach

If what it is about is disinfecting the kitchen, the bathroom or the floor of the house, bleach is one of the products of choice within the recommendations of the Ministry of Health. Bleach acts by oxidizing organic matter but, important! we shouldn't use it undiluted if we don't want our own "matter" to be loaded too. Besides, it wouldn't be more effective either. We can prepare the recommended solution for a commercial bleach by adding 2 tablespoons of bleach in a one liter bottle. If we want to prepare less quantity, the proportion would be to add a teaspoon of dessert in a 200 ml glass.

Ammonia, watch out for the mixes!

In this case, it is not the best option to end coronavirus. Let's remember that it is not convenient to do experiments with soda and less in these times. The combination of bleach plus ammonia releases chloramine. It can become brown and be more lethal than the coronavirus itself.

Commercial preparations: only degreasers

Many wonder if commercial preparations such as Sanytol, El Milagrito, KH7, etc. They are effective against the coronavirus. The reason is that for some people it is more comfortable to use these products that are usually presented in a spray format. In order to be able to affirm emphatically that each product is effective against covid-10, we should individually analyze its composition and check on the Ministry of Health website if it is among the list of virucides. I know, it's not easy to find out. As a general "trick" we could say that if the word "degreaser" appears on the packaging of these products, it is likely to be effective.

Rags or cellulose paper?

Especially if we have a positive at home, rags are not "reliable." Although there is still no solid research in this regard, it is not ruled out that the tissues could become a fomite, that is, an object capable of transmitting the virus. For prevention, and even knowing that it may not be the most sustainable option, disposable cellulose paper may be a safer option these days.

Other questions during the lockdown

Is it true that the virus sticks to makeup or moisturizing creams?

To date there is no scientific evidence that the virus adheres especially to makeup or other cosmetic products. Another thing is that health personnel should not go with makeup, to avoid possible contamination. But this norm is also from the era a. C (before covid-19). What is recommended with respect to cosmetics is to use airless containers (with a dispenser). In traditional "jar-type" formats, there is the possibility of contamination by having to insert your finger several times in the jar.

How do I wash my clothes? What if there is someone sick at home?

It is recommended to wash the clothes at a temperature between 60º and 90º. Important! If someone is sick at home, their clothes should be taken out of the room wrapped in a closed bag. In no case should it be shaken.

What better way to wash dishes?

Preferably in the dishwasher at 60º for at least 30 minutes.

Is it necessary to leave your shoes outside the house?

There is currently no official indication to leave shoes outside the home. Firstly, because the chances of a virus ending up on your shoe are low. And secondly because, even in the event that there are viable viruses swarming around the shoe, a sufficient viral load is necessary for infection. That said, in many countries, culturally, shoes are left at the entrance of the house, among other things, to avoid introducing dirt from outside.
