Love yourself!Break the patriarchy schemes!Think positive!Be yourself! These are some of the messages that we find day and day also in tons of merchandising and, above all, on social networks like Instagram. But are they necessary messages or empty slogans? Those same messages are those that besieged Kat (Barbie Ferreira) in the second episode of the second season of 'Euphoria', where the culture of positivity and self -esteem becomes a real nightmare.

In an HBO series scene, Kat is suffering a personal crisis after realizing that the problem in her relationship is not her boyfriend Ethan, but she. After writing lists of 'pros and cons enjoy the life."Kat was depressed because he had not been able to discover why he does not love Ethan," Rue tells us in voice while we see the young woman lying in the bed swelling hooks.Rue continues: "Kat hates herself. But the problem to hate the same is that you cannot talk about it because, at some point in our recent history, the entire world joined in a sect of self -help that is not able to shut up the fucking mouth on the subject ".

It is then that the fantasy sneaks into 'Euphoria' and a group of influencers imagined by Kat begin to appear in their room, shouting incessantly the typical phrases of self -help and self -love that we would read in a post of Instagram or in a cup of Mr.Wonderful."Kat, you are one of the bravest and most beautiful people I have seen in my life," says a woman in a bikini of sculptural body and impeccable hairstyle."You have to love yourself," says another, equally spectacular."But that's what I'm trying to say, I hate myself!" Kat responds desperately.Do not listen.Soon the situation goes out of hand: "Every day that you go out of bed is an act of courage", "do not let the patriarchy speak for you", "love yourself"...

'Euphoria': la escena de Kat y las 'influencers' ofrece un poderoso mensaje en la era Instagram

These types of slogans seem positive and necessary, but...Are they really? As we can see, Kat is surrounded by a marabunta of imperative messages - imaging the feeling of making scroll on Instagram and seeing all the publications of other seemingly better people, happier, thinner and more healthy than you - and feeling drowned in the sensationnot to be enough. And, when someone is on the verge of depression or feels an irrational hatred towards itself, the culture of positivity does not help at all.The same repeated phrases to satiety completely lose their original meaning, and the people who propagate these messages, do you not sell an idea of happiness very conditioned to certain image and lifestyle factors? Can we accept ourselves, love ourselves, if the model with which we are crushed day and night is that of unattainable perfection?

In a clip behind the 2x02 of 'Euphoria', actress Barbie Ferreira talked about this moment, in which she put a lot about her own experience: "This scene came from many conversations between Sam [Levinson] and I about this self -help mantra of self -helplove yourself that is now sewn on pillows. For me, it was very personal, because there is this expectation about me for being a safe person, which, I have to say, I am not sure of myself at all. There is a false idea about me, which is that simply because I am more filled in a world of thin people I have to be very sure. With Kat, he has this fantasy and tries to tell you: Don't you listen to me?I didn't like it and nothing you can say will change that ".The contradiction is evident: to reach that ideal of self -esteem you have to look very determined.Perhaps we fool ourselves thinking that the body positivity has made a hole in our culture, but the reality is that beauty standards are still immovable.

In the same clip, the creator of the series, Sam Levinson, also said about the background that hides this scene: "It became a fun way to address how suffocating social networks can be.It always gives me the feeling that everyone is giving advice to people who have not asked for them.I think that feeling of not being heard and not assessing individual emotional experience is an even greater problem ".

There is a brilliant detail in the scene that offers an important layer of complexity throughout this matter. One of Kat's intruders tells him that his appearance is the result of his mental problems."Hopefully my mental health made me look like you, you are the most fucking beautiful person I have ever seen!" Kat replies, frustrated.Behind this moment there is a recognition that perfection Instagramera hides many mental problems that not only affect those who like, but also those who upload photos and stories and feel that they must adjust to an impossible standard to be happy. Also that they should only teach the good, never bad.Filters eliminate grains and other supposed imperfections, and even mold the body. The messages are short, emoticons abound. The videos focus on what you need to know to work better in this society, to succeed, to know how to prepare a smoothie or how to tone the back of your thighs. What they leave out, however, is what we face every day and that brands would not want to sponsor. Thus, the screams are silenced.

That "feeling of not being heard" of which Levinson spoke is the key to everything.Answer any personal image problem with a "love yourself" is not wanting to understand what is behind those feelings.Sometimes you have to explore negativity to find peace.Sometimes positivity can be the most toxic to what we can use.Sometimes, instead of listening to a phrase that we could read in a sticker, we need generous listeners and people willing to accept the ugliest parts of life.
