BUENOS AIRES, ON THE VERGE OF COLLAPSE

The health system of the City of Buenos Aires is "close to collapse", with a total occupation of intensive care beds in the private sector and 80 percent in public hospitals, for which the authorities have suspended surgical operations non-urgent, according to different sources from the health system consulted by the Télam news agency.

From the Association of Private Activity Physicians (AMAP) they have reported that the occupancy of beds in the 66 private clinics and sanatoriums in the city ranges between 95 and 100 percent for the third consecutive week.

In the public network of hospitals, the occupation of intensive care beds has reached 79.7 percent, according to the Buenos Aires Ministry of Health. Of the 450 total beds available for seriously ill patients, some 359 are occupied, leaving only 91 available in the city.

Given this scenario, the Government has suspended surgeries in private clinics and sanatoriums and admissions to public hospitals for 30 days to prioritize the care of patients with coronavirus, given the upsurge in infections. In hospitals, other spaces have begun to be set up within the facilities to be able to add intensive care beds in the midst of the peak of the second wave of infections, which this week reaches an average of 3,560 daily cases.
