With the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of masks is mandatory to care for public health, but for those who are still reluctant to use it, they may do so when they discover that they can look more attractive.
According to a team of researchers from Cardiff University, Wales, United Kingdom, he found that wearing mouth covers, particularly the blue medical mask, increases facial appeal.
But it wasn't always so, Dr. Michael Lewis of the College of Psychology at the university indicated that prior to the pandemic, the research found that medical masks reduced attractiveness because it related to diseases or ailments.
Impact of the pandemic
However, the team wanted to apply the investigation again. "we wanted to test whether this had changed since facial covers became omnipresent and understand if the type of mask had any effect," Lewis said.
The study found how different types of facial masks changed the attractiveness of 40 male faces. "this may be because we are used to health workers wearing blue masks and we now associate them with people in medical or care professions," and we therefore feel safer and more confident.
The university is planning the same research to see if the same effect occurs with the female faces.
